From Classroom to Boardroom: Finding Purpose and Fulfillment

In the world of education, there are those who inspire within the four walls of a classroom, and then there are those who transcend those boundaries to make a profound impact on a larger scale.

My journey from a middle school math teacher to the Vice President of Implementation and Enablement at Reading Horizons has been nothing short of transformative. Today, I’m thrilled to share my story, my beliefs, and the driving force behind my passion for education and literacy.

The Roots of an Educator

My journey in education began as a middle school math teacher. For seven years, I dedicated my time and energy to the students in my local school district. The classroom was my stage, and I cherished the moments when I saw the spark of understanding in a student's eyes. But deep within, I knew there was a broader impact I wanted to make, a mission greater than what the classroom could contain.

The Call to Leadership

I've always felt a calling towards leadership. It's a path I knew I was destined to tread. My time as a teacher equipped me with invaluable skills—skills I still apply in my current role. Communication, empathy, and adaptability—these qualities cultivated in the classroom continue to serve me well as I navigate the corporate landscape.

A Journey Through K-12 Education Companies

Before my role at Reading Horizons, I embarked on a journey through various K-12 education companies. Each experience added to my knowledge and helped me understand the intricacies of the education industry.

However, it wasn't until I joined Reading Horizons that I found a true alignment of values and mission.

The Power of Literacy

For me, literacy is not just a subject; it's a fundamental right. It's the key that unlocks doors, opens up opportunities, and bridges gaps. It creates a world where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Reading Horizons shares this belief, and that's why it's such a fantastic company to work for. Our culture is centered on purpose and fulfillment. Every day, we work tirelessly to create products that help people learn to read, empowering them with the skills they need to succeed.

Leadership Principles

As a leader, I hold certain principles dear. Building deep relationships with my teams is at the core of my leadership philosophy. It's these relationships that foster trust, collaboration, and innovation. I'm committed to championing equity and inclusion, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued. Leading by example means setting high standards for myself and my team, and encouraging growth and excellence.

The Strength of Balance

While my professional life is fulfilling, I also believe in the power of balance. This year alone, I've had the privilege of exploring five countries, expanding my horizons beyond the boardroom. Celebrating personal milestones reminds me that life is a journey meant to be savored.

A Heart That Beats for Education

No matter where life takes me, I'll always be an educator at heart. Education is the cornerstone of empowerment, and literacy is the foundation upon which opportunities are built. It's a journey from the classroom to the boardroom, but the essence of my mission remains constant—to make education and literacy accessible to all.

Tips for Transitioning Teachers

  1. Reflect on Your Why: My career transition began with a deep reflection on my motivations. Why did I want to leave the classroom, and what impact did I aspire to make in my new role? Your "why" will serve as your guiding light throughout this process, helping you stay focused and committed to your goals.

  2. Alignment of Values and Mission: During your job search, seek organizations that align with your personal values and mission. Your career should be a source of fulfillment and purpose. Find a company or role that resonates with your passion; it will fuel your journey.

  3. Lead with Your Strengths: In a new role, remember to leverage your strengths. As a teacher, you've developed many transferable skills. These attributes can serve as a strong foundation for leadership and success in your new career.

My Education Journey Continues

My career has been a journey of purpose and fulfillment. From the classroom to the boardroom, I've embraced the role of an educator and a leader with passion and dedication. Literacy is the bridge to opportunity, and Reading Horizons is the vehicle through which we're driving change.

As I continue to lead, build relationships, and foster equity, I'm grateful for the journey that has brought me here. And while I'm driven by my role, I'll always remember to balance life with adventure and personal milestones.

Thank you for joining me on this voyage, and I look forward to the endless possibilities that lie ahead in the world of education and literacy. Together, we can empower minds and change lives—one word at a time.
